The Independent Food City

Imagine a future where Malmö's cityscape becomes the foundation for a resilient, sustainable food system. Instead of relying on distant, fragile supply chains, the city embraces local food hubs. Malmö’s unique constraints—limited space, growing population, and environmental challenges—become the catalysts for innovation, transforming how food is grown, distributed, and consumed. 

The innovation project Plattform STAD, supported by Vinnova under the initiative ‘A new recipe for the food system’ conducted a pilot project centered around the city of Malmö. The exhibition “The Independent Food City” aimed to explore how one-third of the food consumed in Malmö could be grown, processed, and retailed within the city limits over the next decade. To achieve this objective, we investigated several regenerative practices, developed prototypes, and presented potential solutions at the exhibition held at Southern Sweden Design Days in Malmö between 23–26 May 2024.

What I didI was involved in developing the main concept for the exhibition, participating in brainstorming sessions and workshops to establish the individual scenes. My main tasks included designing the overall experience and layout of the exhibition space, creating technical drawings for building podiums, sourcing materials, finding creative solutions to any issues that arose, and crafting physical artefacts for various scenes.
